Sciatica discomfort most commonly occurs when a herniated (or bulging) disk presses against part of the nerve. Although the pain associated with sciatica can be severe, most cases resolve with non-operative treatments in a few weeks.

Not all lower-back discomfort is sciatic pain
Sciatica is commonly mis-diagnosed, often used to describe any pain experienced in the lower-back, buttock or leg.

The chances are:
- Annual incidence of 1—5%
- Lifetime incidence of 15—40%
